For Dr Linnett Griffiths, the option to complete her GP training in a practice close to her home town of Abergele, with flexible working hours and a family-friendly approach, made North Wales an obvious choice. Linnett explains:
“The GP training I’ve received here in North Wales over the past three years has been exceptional. The environment is incredibly friendly and supportive, with a wide variety of locations to complete your training and language is no barrier -you don’t need to be able to speak Welsh to train or work here. From small rural practices to larger town centre surgeries, there’s something to suit everyone. For me, the added flexibility of being able to select a GP practice close to my home town to complete my training has been great. It allows me to strike that perfect work life balance, between the needs of my family and my patients.
“I’ve also been impressed by the up close and personal approach to my GP training. My programme directors and colleagues have been incredibly encouraging and helpful every step of the way. While the unique education contract here in Wales, has guaranteed me easy access to the required number of outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, ward rounds and other educational opportunities needed to complete my training. The flexible training options on offer also make it perfect for anyone looking to start a family. Many of my friends have been able to complete their GP training, on a less than full-time basis, to fit around raising their children and other commitments.
“North Wales is also perfectly placed for enjoying quality time with friends and family outside of the day job. The pace of life can be as relaxed or as active as you like. From mountain walks and lakes to coastal retreats and historic castles, there’s never a dull moment. What’s more, with Chester just a 30-minute drive and Manchester and Liverpool within an hour’s reach by car, you’ll be spoiled for choice for eating, drinking and shopping. North Wales is a great place to train, work, live and raise a family, surrounded by supportive colleagues, community and stunning areas of natural beauty. I thoroughly recommend it.”
