Dr Jessica was born and raised in Nigeria, where she attended medical school at the University of Ibadan. With several relatives who were doctors, her decision to pursue medicine was influenced by a mix of personal and familial factors. With an excellent education and supportive family, Jessica has since moved from Nigeria to Wales to become a GP.
Dr Jessica says:
Medicine has always been my sole passion. I often joke that I wouldn’t be good at anything else, and thankfully my journey into medical school was relatively smooth. I only had to apply once and was accepted right away and was fortunate enough to have an immensely supportive family throughout my training. My journey to becoming a doctor was a very rewarding moment for me, as one of the most pivotal moments in my life was losing my father as a child. That loss ignited a desire to understand health and help others, shaping my path toward medicine.
After graduating, I spent two additional years in Nigeria preparing for licensing exams to move abroad. While initially interested in internal medicine, the delays in my career progression prompted me to explore other options. General Practice stood out as it offered a better balance between professional fulfilment and a future-oriented work-life balance.
The GP training programme in Wales involves two years in general practice and one year in a hospital setting. I am now in the final stretch of my training, with just a few months to go. So far it has been a rigorous but rewarding journey, and I’m grateful for the experiences that have shaped me professionally and personally.
When looking at places where I could go to live and work, Wales wasn’t on my radar initially. Growing up, I frequently visited England but never ventured into Wales. However, during my training application process there were limited options for placements available, but I found that Wales really stood out as a great option. After some research, I decided to give it a try - and I’m so glad I did.
Pembrokeshire was my first placement, with the area’s stunning natural beauty quicky winning me over. I love being near the sea and being surrounded by nature. I had never really driven before, but it became a necessity here, as it’s a great way to get out and about visiting and exploring various places like Tenby, local parks and zoos.
The supportive environment for trainees in Wales also played a big role in my decision to stay here. Administrative processes, such as claiming expenses, are straightforward, and there’s a genuine effort to support trainees. My first trainer was exceptional, and she guided me through every step of the process, ensuring I was confident before I started managing patients independently.
In Nigeria, I enjoyed board games like chess and Scrabble, even competing for my school. I’ve continued this hobby in Wales in various board game clubs, although I’ve also embraced new activities. For example, I’ve taken up traveling and exploring the Pembrokeshire’s scenic spots.
I’ve also made wonderful friends here who’ve enriched my life outside of work. We often meet for drinks or social outings, which helps maintain a healthy work-life balance. The welcoming community has made adapting to life in Wales so much easier.
Passing my exams on the first attempt was a significant milestone for me as an international trainee. Currently, I’m focused on gaining more experience and growing in my role as a GP. In the future, I am considering exploring special interests like psychiatry or occupational health, possibly through fellowship programmes.
On a personal note, I look forward to starting a family soon and exploring opportunities for GP partnerships in Wales. My partner and I are also planning to settle here long-term, with hopes of buying a house in the next few years.
Wales has offered me a fresh start and the chance to build a fulfilling career. The NHS in Wales provides excellent training, and I’m proud to contribute to its ongoing success. As I continue this journey, I remain grateful for the support of my trainers, colleagues, and the vibrant Welsh community that now feels like home.
